Hong Kong protests: Student in police clash is first protester to die

A student died today after falling from a car park during clashes between police and anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.

Chow Tsz-lok, 22, became the first fatality from injuries sustained during five months of protests that have rocked the former British territory.

He had reportedly been in a coma with a brain injury since he was found early on Monday on the second floor of the car park.

Minutes earlier, television footage showed police firing tear gas at it after objects were hurled down at officers in the street when they chased a mob.

Police did not rule out the possibility he was fleeing from tear gas but said officers had fired from a distance. Officials also denied claims that police pushed Mr Chow down and had delayed emergency services.

His death is expected to intensify protests that have been sparked by a now-scrapped extradition bill to mainland China.
