A controversial social media post from Geelong star Bailey Smith has drawn the ire of Mitch Brown, who has called it homophobic.

Brown, the first AFL player to publicly reveal he is bisexual, was unimpressed after Smith made a series of Instagram posts from the Cats' Mad Monday function.

One of the posts featured Smith and captain Patrick Dangerfield in a pose referencing the movie Brokeback Mountain, which depicted the story of a complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys.

Brown first published a picture of deceased Australian actor Heath Ledger, who played one of the lead characters in the movie.

"Just for the record, Heath Ledger's way hotter," Brown joked.

But then Brown added in a separate post: "In all seriousness though, guys do better.

"Last time I checked, losing a grand final doesn't make you gay, but being homophobic definitely makes you a loser."

Geelong players had their Mad Monday function two days after a crushing 47-point grand final loss to Brisbane.
