Homophobic hate mail attack leaves Scots cake shop owner and husband terrified for safety

A cake shop owner has spoken of his horror at receiving homophobic hate mail calling him a "queer, p**fy pr**k".

Michael Burns, who owns Special Days Cakes in Uddingston, was sent the letter yesterday morning directed at him and his husband Stephen Whyteside.

The letter, which has been sent anonymously, calls for the shop to be shut down and for the person to be given a refund because they don't want their "hands near any food".

A female staff member at the Old Edinburgh Road shop opened the letter and was left hysterical over the contents.

The couple immediately called police and have been left in fear over any future attacks.

Michael, 51, told the Daily Record: "When I first looked at it I thought it was a joke, but then it sunk in and I thought I'm not taking this lying down.

"My husband was more upset than me and we thought we have to try and find the culprit.

"We can't think of anyone who would send a letter like this, I'm lost for words. I've never received anything like this in my life. I'm quite a strong person but this ripped the stomach out of me. Who in this age would write this?"

Since receiving the letter the couple, who have been together for 19 years, have felt nervous and fearful even going to great lengths to check security cameras at their Bothwell home.

"Every time our dog barks we grab the ipad to check the cameras," Michael added.

"My 90-year-old mum lives with us all night I worried that someone was going to throw a bottle through our window. It's no way to live."

Michael hopes someone will recognise the writing in the letter and come forward.

The baker has no idea who would target him or the shop as said there have been no complaints about their service.

The hate mail letter reads: "Dear p**fs.

"If I had known that you are a f***ing gay then I would have given your shop a wide berth.

"I will be returning to get my money back as I don't want any of your hands near any food. You should be shut down. "

A spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm that a complaint was received on Thursday 19 September 2019, and enquiries are ongoing into this hate crime."
