Homicide squad search for clues into fatal Brisbane house fire

Investigators had difficulties accessing the Pavonia Street building due to the level of destruction.

Post-mortems due to be carried out today could provide clues as to what caused a fatal house fire that claimed the lives of three people on Brisbane's northside on Tuesday morning.

Police are treating the case as a possible homicide and have now formally identified one of the victims.

Investigators initially believed two women and a man perished in the fire, but now say it was two men and a woman.

One of them has been confirmed as a 53-year-old man, who had connections to the property.

Police have not released details about the other two victims.

The ABC understands the property had been leased to two women and a man, and real estate agents had checked over the home last month.

A huge group of investigators is now involved, including the homicide squad, Ferny Grove CIB, scientific, photographic and fingerprint officers, as well as the disaster victim identification squad.

SES crews have spent Wednesday morning combing the scene at Pavonia Street in Everton Hills, while forensic police remain inside the house.

Neighbours have told police they heard explosions, cries for help, and a car speeding off around the time when the fire broke out early yesterday.

Acting Inspector Joe Zitny said police were looking into whether the victims perished in the fire, or whether they had died beforehand.

"Overnight, the three people have been extracted from the crime scene and we anticipate the post-mortems should commence this morning," he said.

"There's been barriers to the crime scene — for example the investigators, the forensic examination had difficulties accessing the place to begin with given the destruction of the residence."

He appealed for anyone who had information or security footage from the street to come forward.
