Homicide squad called in after man dies with head injuries at Plantagenet Hotel, southern WA

Homicide detectives are investigating after a man with head injuries died at a landmark hotel in regional Western Australia.

Police were called by St John Ambulance to the Plantagenet Hotel in Lowood Road, Mount Barker, about 370kms south-east of Perth at 12.40am today.

In a statement, police said the 54-year-old man was found at the hotel with "head and facial injuries" and died at the scene.

A man in his 40s is assisting police.

Police set up a tent in the hotel car park and forensics officers were working in a motel room at the rear of the hotel, on the corner of Muir and Lord streets on Saturday afternoon.

Well-known in the region, the pub was built between 1912 and 1914 by the prominent Sounness family. It is on the main street of the Great Southern town, which is home to about 3,000 people.
