Hometown honors for Japanese comedian Ken Shimura

The city government of Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo, intends to bestow the title of honorary citizen on comedian Ken Shimura, who died at the age of 70 in March from pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus. A related bill is expected to be agreed upon at a city council meeting to be held on June 25, The city rose in notoriety across the nation thanks to a skit created by Shimura in the '70s to the tune of a folk song called "Furusato no minyo: Higashi-Murayama ondo" (The song of my hometown: a cheer for Higashi-Murayama). Shimura would be the third person of the city to receive such an honor.
