'Homesick' Irish student found dead in her room at English college

A 'homesick' Northern Irish student was found dead in her room at an Essex college, an inquest has heard.

Angela McKeown, 23, was studying at Writtle College in Chelmsford, Essex, when she tragically died away on April 11 this year.

The university received concerns about Angela's welfare and staff decided to force entry to her room at the University's halls of residence - Essex Live reports.

Upon entering the room, staff sadly found Angela, from Portadown in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Emergency services were called, where paramedics confirmed that Angela had sadly died. Police reported that there were no suspicious circumstances or third party involvement in Angela's death.

An inquest into her death held on Thursday, August 5 at Essex Coroner's Court in Chelmsford heard that she was missing home at the time of her death.

Angela was living alone in the halls of residence and reported to a friend the previous day that she was 'feeling low' and had reportedly consumed a quantity of vodka.

However, coroner Michelle Brown stated the toxicology report showed that alcohol in Angela's system wasn't 'of any substantial level'.

The court heard that Angela had no previous thoughts of suicide before and that her death came as a shock to the family.

Coroner Brown added that she had seen text messages that were ongoing that night leading up to the incident.

She stated that there was "nothing to suggest she intended to take her own life", though there were elements of the text message that seemed to suggest she was 'homesick'.

Summing up, Coroner Brown added that she had considered a conclusion of suicide but on the balance of probability was "not satisfied she intended to take her own life".

The coroner concluded that Angela died as a result of an accident.
