Homes Under the Hammer rat-infested property unrecognisable as it sells for £43k

A rat-infested pad sold on Homes Under the Hammer for £43,000 was unrecognisable by the time its new owner had shown it some love.

The "incredibly filthy" property in Stoke-on-Trent was in such a state that host Dion Dublin, 52, warned viewers whoever bought the home had their work cut out.

Explaining he wouldn't be going inside the two-bed home because of its issues, he said: “When you take on a property like this, in this condition, the first thing you’re going to have to think about is skips and how many you’re going to need.

"It all needs to go before you see what you’ve got to work with.

“Now, I’m not going to be going in there because there’s sewage, it’s incredibly filthy and there’s signs of a rat infestation as well.

"Neither me nor the film crew will be going in there because it’s a huge health and safety hazard.”

However the state of the place didn't put off HGV driver and breakdancer Yan, who told viewers doing up dilapidated pads was his "hobby".

He said: "“It’s like a hobby for me. I did houses with friends before, so I’m looking to do it in my free time. When I saw it, I was thinking that’s the right project for me.

“[Before the renovation] there [was] nothing in there. No plumbing, no electricity, so everything needed to be done. At least I don’t have any trash in the house.”

Thanks to Yan's handy work, the once wild garden strewn with detritus was completely transformed into a cement-covered pathway with gravel either side.

There was also new fencing put around the property, new exterior walls, which had crumbled down, and smart new windows to replace the ones that had previously been boarded up.

The interior didn't disappoint either.

A bright open-plan kitchen boasting a number of original features was sure to "entice people through the door" - according to Dion.

Yan, who did up the home with his wife and local tradespeople said he had thought about living in the home himself, but decided to rent it out to a family instead.

He wasn't keen on the £650 to £700-a-month rent valuation given to the home, as he had already secured a £800-a-month tenant.
