Homes ruined, businesses shut and cars floating down the road - the Stockport suburb hit by devastating floods for second time in three years

Homes were devastated, businesses shut and roads were left impassable after parts of Bramhall were submerged by flood water.

Cars were seen floating along the road as water poured into nearby buildings in the Stockport suburb.

The region saw nearly a month's-worth of rainfall in just 24 hours.

Eleven people and four dogs had to be rescued from properties near to the junction of Bramhall Lane and Bridge Lane on Wednesday night.

Fire crews responded to four men who became trapped in a funeral directors and a woman was also rescued from a Nisa shop nearby.

What remained on Thursday morning was a scene of devastation for residents and business owners as a huge clean-up operation began.

It is the second time in three years Bramhall has been hit by flooding, with residents describing almost identical scenes to 2016.

The roundabout in the centre of the village remained closed on Thursday as vehicles and workers began restoring the area.

A local Nisa shop had been left in a scene of chaos, with confectionery items and a redundant mop bucket sprawled across the floor.

Meanwhile, residents attempted to shovel thick mud from the front driveways of their deluged properties.

One couple who live on Bridge Lane had begun a lengthy clean-up process after their home was caught up in the floods for a second time.

In September 2016, their house was damaged by contaminated water, leaving them displaced from their home for over eleven months.

As they stood in the chaos of their kitchen, surrounded by muddy water, the couple said they believed this time was worse.

Speaking to the M.E.N, the residents, who asked not to be named, said they were 'most annoyed' that precautionary measures had not been implemented - despite flood warning having been in place since Sunday.

"We weren't even given sand bags or anything like that," they said.

"I'm not saying the house wouldn't have flooded even with them but it just feels like we have been left as an after thought by the local authority.

"The clean-up operation has obviously been brilliant but where was all this before?"

Caroline Simpson, corporate director for place at Stockport council said: "Alongside many other areas, Stockport has experienced excessive amounts of rainfall over the past few days.

“Our priority continues to be the safety and well-being of our residents.

“Our main priority has been to keep residents affected by the recent floods safe and have provided information on what to do if homes or businesses have been affected by flood water.

“Council officers and partner agencies have visited areas right across the Borough where flooding has occurred – predominantly Hazel Grove, Bramhall and Cheadle and have spoken to residents and businesses affected by the flooding and to see what we can do to help.”

“A recovery plan to clean up and help those who were affected by the flooding has now begun and this will be our main priority for the coming days. Our team have worked through the night to get our roads clear and support areas affected and we will continue our efforts over the coming days and weeks ahead.”

“Any residents affected by flooding should phone our contact centre directly on 0161 217 6111 or our emergency control centre on 0161 474 5555. Please report sewage flooding to United Utilities direct on 0345 672 3723.”

Council bosses in Stockport say they remain on 'high alert' over flooding - and are 'making necessary preparations' to take action.

A series of road closures have been announced.

It follows reports of worsening flooding in Stockport and across Greater Manchester.

In Stockport, the council said 'extreme weather conditions' on Thursday have led to the closure of Crossley Road, on the border of Heaton Chapel and Burnage; Bridge Lane, in Bramhall and Bramhall Lane South.

Restrictions will remain on the A555 Airport link road in Stockport until further notice.

The council said: "Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to your journey."

Elsewhere flooding is being reported in areas of Woodley.
