Homes near the sea – in pictures

Homes by the Sea: Homes sea: coastguard
Coastguard cottage, Devon. Once the modest berth of a coastguard, this cottage in the village of Newton Ferrers now requires wealthy occupants, for the watery views have inflated the price to £580,000. From the terrace you can gaze over the river Yealm towards Dartmoor, and you can moor a boat at your own quayside. Your riches do not buy you much luxury, however: it’s quite a small house with just three bedrooms (albeit doubles), and two modest receptions. But it is tastefully fitted and steeped in character with an original cast iron range, fireplaces and a wood-burning stove.

Homes by the Sea: Homes by sea: Anglesey
Glamour in granite, Anglesey. When you wake in the master suite you can peer through the sliding glass doors on to your private, sandy beach, which forms part of the 2.2 acres surrounding this house in Treaddur Bay. Built in the 1930s, it has been expensively glamourised with granite, limestone and walnut. Three of the four bedrooms have en suites and are wired for satellite TV, and surround sound has been installed in the 25ft living room from where a long balcony absorbs the marine views. The downside is the price: only those with £785,000 need apply.

Homes by the Sea: Homes by sea: Lighthouse
A Scottish lighthouse. The tallest tower in Scotland, this lighthouse was built by the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson on the tip of Tarbat Ness peninsula after 16 boats sank in a storm one night in 1826. Below it are two small keepers’ cottages. The current owners live in the one-bed one with a Jacuzzi spa room and two sitting rooms. The second house, a three-bedder, has been used as a holiday let. Almost 2 acres of this spectacular site of special scientific interest belong to the property, along with views across the Moray Firth to the Cairngorms and the Sutherland mountains. You have to share access with the Northern Lighthouse Board, which still owns the tower, and LPG gas fuels cooking and hot water. Yours for £348,000.

Homes by the Sea: Homes by sea: Bigbury
Cliffside perch, Devon. From this string of apartments on the cliffs at Bigbury-on-Sea, steps lead down to a sandy beach. And from the balcony with its electric awning you can gaze over Burgh island, the Avon estuary and the sea. It’s a capacious south-facing flat with a 30ft living area, three bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a Jacuzzi bath and sweeping rural views in all directions. Cost: £350,000.

Homes by the Sea: Homes by the sea: Schoolhouse
Back to school, Cornwall. Victorian pupils learned their letters with the sea lapping the walls of their schoolhouse. Now part of the building is this four-bedroom home rising off the shore in the quaint village of Cawsand with direct access to the beach, a slipway and a private boat store. Three of the bedrooms have en suites, and in the sitting room are exposed stone walls, ceiling beams and window seats to drink in the sea views. The unlucky occupant of bedroom four must cross an outside corridor to reach the bathroom and the garden is shared with the neighbours. Yours for £495,000.
