Homes left without water after huge mains burst causes flooding in Newcastle

Some homes were left without water in Newcastle after a huge mains burst caused flooding in the area.

Officers from Northumbria Police, fire crews and workers from Northumbrian Water have been working throughout Friday night and Saturday morning after the leak in the Killingworth Road area between Longbenton and South Gosforth.

Pictures from the area show some parts of the road flooded during the night, with several parked cars almost at risk of being under water.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said on social media: "Due to a large burst main overnight in the #KillingworthRoad area, some customers may have no water/low pressure.

"We are working hard to resolve the issue and will provide further updates as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience."

They later added: "We are continuing to work hard to restore supplies after a burst in the #KillingworthRoad area.

"Some properties may now have water although this may be at a lower pressure. We will continue to provide updates for those without a supply."

Images posted by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service on Saturday morning show the road has largely been cleared of the water.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed on social media that Killingworth Road had been closed both ways between South Gosforth and West Farm Avenue while work went on to clear the water.
