Homes evacuated in Roath after 'huge flames' at derelict house

A man has described the moment he saw the road "filling with smoke" after a large house fire in Cardiff.

On Friday, July 10, firefighters from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to a house fire on Shirley Road in Roath where 'huge flames' were seen coming from the property.

The fire at the terraced house on Shirley Road was said to be contained to that one property.

It was confirmed they were tackling two separate house fires in Roath - one on Shirley Road and another on Stacey Road.

Resident Sam Walters saw the fire at the house on Shirley Road, which is believed to be derelict.

Sam, 30, said: "I saw smoke filling the road. There was smoke coming from the attic of the derelict house so I called 999 and spoke with the emergency services.

"There were multiple fire engines. One arrived between five and seven minutes and was followed by another three vehicles, or maybe four.

"From the beginning you could hear popping. It sounded as though fireworks were going off but apparently it was roof tiles."

After the fire broke out, Sam said residents living in on the street were asked to evacuate their properties.

"Everyone was asked to move down towards the end of the street or up towards the other way," he said.

"I live in the area so I stayed in my garden."

Sam added that the property has been empty for at least a year.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to a fire on Shirley Road at 8.38pm.

A spokeswoman confirmed the property was derelict and only one property was affected.

She said: "An investigation was carried out this morning with the police and that was completed at 12.18pm."

She also confirmed the fire service was called to a fire at 7.45pm on Friday, July 10 on Stacey Road.

She said the fire started in a bedroom and was accidental.
