Homes evacuated in four Christmas Eve security alerts

Homes have been evacuated in four Christmas Eve security alerts as police and Army investigate a number of suspicious objects.

Several roads have been closed in the Coleraine area and the PSNI have put diversions in place.

Police reported that four suspicious objects were found in four separate places, believed to be residential areas including Hazelbank Road in the town.

It is understood the alert started before sunrise with a number of people woken from their sleep and helped to leave their homes for their own safety.

Emergency services are currently at the scenes.

Caoimhe Archibald MLA, said the incident has caused serious disruption to residents.

The Sinn Fein representative, said: "This is disgraceful. The last thing people need is having to leave their homes in the middle of a cold winter's night and at a time when emergency services are already under pressure during a public health emergency.

"Those responsible have nothing to offer local people apart from disruption and inconvenience.

"I would appeal to anyone with information on this incident to contact the PSNI."
