Homes evacuated by police and road closed following gas leak caused by crash

Homes were evacuated in Stapleton after a lorry crashed into a gas lamp.

Fire crews were called to Wickham Hill after receiving reports of a road traffic collision yesterday afternoon (June 4).

An engineer from Wales & West Utilities was sent to the scene after the company was alerted to a smell of gas in the area.

They discovered a small gas leak caused by the crash.

Emergency services evacuated nearby properties "as a precaution".

Residents were allowed back into their homes after safety checks were carried out.

A spokesperson for Wales & West Utilities said: “We were alerted to reports of a smell of gas in the Wickham Hill area of Stapleton yesterday (June 4) and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

"On arrival, we discovered a third-party vehicle had damaged a gas lamp in the area, causing a small leak.

"Our team worked as safely and as quickly as possible and made the area safe.

“As a precaution, the police initially evacuated nearby properties, however after carrying out the necessary safety checks on arrival, our engineers allowed them to return to their homes."

He added Wickham Hill was closed while the safety checks were carried out.

"In agreement with Bristol City Council and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we worked, Wickham Hill was closed at its junction with Broom Hill," he said.

"Once we had stopped the leak and made the area safe, we reopened the road at 5.50pm."

What to do in a gas leak

"If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night."

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed they were called at 1.18pm to reports of a "road traffic collision involving a HGV and a gas lantern".
