Homes evacuated and road closed after grass fire takes hold in Highlands

Police are investigating a grass fire the island of South Uist which led to the evacuation of two households.

Power supply to a number of residents was also disrupted as a result of the blaze which occurred at Luidaig, South Uist next to the B888 on Friday, April 30.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Crews were called to the scene around 5.25pm.

Police were also in attendance and the road was closed to motorists.

A probe has now been launched into the cause of the fire.

Police Constable Michelle Nelson said: “Fortunately no one was injured and although two homes were evacuated they were not damaged as the fire service managed to contain and extinguish the fire.

“Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen activity in the area to get in touch via 101, quoting incident 2622 of Friday, 30 April.”
