Homes evacuated after suspected gas leak ignited

Homes have been evacuated in Liverpool after a suspected gas leak caught fire.

Emergency services have been on the scene, at Boundary Lane, since 2am on Tuesday, August 2, after reports of a gas leak. A 25 metre cordon was put in place surrounding the area as a precaution.

Images from the scene, show black scorch marks which are reportedly left from a fire that ignited from the gas leak. Merseyside’s gas emergency service Cadent told the ECHO that their teams responded early this morning and there is no gas leak currently.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "A number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution and a 25m cordon has been put in place. Utilities have been isolated to properties in the affected area. Cadent and Merseyside Police are also in attendance.

"Road closures are in place at the junction of Boundary Lane and Severs Street, Boundary Lane and New Red Rock View and Whitefield Road." After being at the scene for a number of hours, a spokesperson for the service issued an update, it reads: "One fire engine remains in attendance. Scottish Power is now also in attendance and is working alongside Cadent.

"A number of residents have been allowed back into their homes, whilst others have found alternative accommodation with family and friends.

"Multi-agency meetings have taken place between MFRS, Merseyside Police, Cadent, Scottish Power, Liverpool City Council and Torus Housing. Road closures remain in place as detailed above. Please avoid the area."

A spokesman for Merseyside’s gas emergency service Cadent said: "As the gas emergency service, our teams responded early this morning to this incident. Right now, there is no gas leaking - we carry very sensitive detection kit and there are no readings.

"Scottish Power are on site this morning to isolate some cabling underground. Once they have done that, we can assess if there is any damage to the gas main.

"We know a small number of properties were evacuated by the fire brigade before our arrival on site. If you ever smell gas, or notice damage to a gas pipe, please always ring the national gas emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999. All calls are recorded and may be monitored..
