Homes evacuated after explosive device found at Newport property

Homes have been evacuated after an explosive device was found at a Newport property.

The bomb squad are at the scene of the incident after police were called to the scene in Bassaleg at around 12.25pm on Wednesday , November 18.

A 100m cordon is currently in place and the incident is causing bus and road delays in the area.

Gwent Police said: "We received a call at approximately 12.25pm this afternoon (November 18), reporting that a suspected explosive device had been found at an address on Laurel Drive in Bassaleg.

"The residents of the property and those living within a 100m cordon have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

"The EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) has been informed and are en route to examine the object."

Pictures show the Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal team heading to the scene.

Traffic monitors are reporting that Caerphilly Road is shut in both directions due to the incident near the Tredegar Arms.

Stagecoach said their 50/50A service is unable to service Newport and Bassaleg due to the road closure.
