Homes evacuated after car crashes into gas main during police chase

A number of people in Wakefield were forced to evacuate their homes after a gas main burst as a dramatic police chase came to an abrupt end.

West Yorkshire Police officers were in pursuit of a vehicle near the Darnley estate, Wakefield, at around 9.15pm on Wedneday, April 8 but managed to stop the driver on Plumpton Road.

However, as the suspect stopped he crashed into a gas pipe.

It led to the road being closed for several hours as people were evacuated from their homes.

Police and firefighters remained at the scene until the gas connection was fixed and deemed safe, and people were then later allowed back inside their properties.

Two men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of a number of offences.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed that enquiries are ongoing in relation to the incideint.
