Homes at Sex Education location at Caerleon Campus approved

Controversial plans to build housing on the former University of South Wales campus in Caerleon have been approved, despite concerns over construction traffic and pollution.

Newport City Council's planning committee have approved the scheme put forward by Redrow Homes for 219 homes on the site.

The site, which forms part of the filming location of Netflix's Sex Education, had a previous application in 2018 rejected for 310 homes because of traffic and air quality concerns.

The £6.2 million plan for the Grade-II listed campus in Caerleon, formerly used by the university until it closed in 2014, involves building 219 houses on the site.

The houses are set to include a mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, including open market and affordable houses.

Developer Redrow Homes, which bought the site from USW in July 2019, submitted its plans to Newport Council following a public consultation.

WalesOnline reported in December that some local residents, in addition to the Caerleon Civic Society, had objected to Redrow's plans, citing concerns over air quality, traffic and local health and education facilities.

Caerleon councillor Joan Watkins said residents have "substantial concerns" over the plans.

"My position is very straightforward - this is a huge development to be built in the village, and currently the infrastructure to support such a development is just not there."

In November, the Caerleon Civic Society also repeated its objections to the development, warning that it could have a "significantly detrimental impact on future air quality" in the area around High Street and Castle Street.

The society stated that the extra traffic generated by the development would be required to use Caerleon's one-way traffic system, potentially causing issues.

Speaking in December, Redrow Homes said a number of issues had been addressed throughout the consultation period.

Jane Carpenter, planning director for Redrow, said: “The local authority has carried out a full consultation on all matters raised, along with the recent changes that we have submitted to our plans that include an additional footpath, updated arrangements for visitor parking and a re-plan of the main boulevard in line with requests from consultees."
