Homes and businesses plunged into darkness by power cut

Dozens of homes and restaurants were plunged into darkness this evening as a power cut hit one of Bristol's most vibrant and busy areas.

Western Power Distribution sent engineers to Stokes Croft, where 31 properties had their electricity cut off.

The outage was first reported around 7.10pm this evening (March 28).

There were reports on social media, the Tesco Express in Cheltenham Road was temporarily closed.

And bosses at pizzeria Flour and Ash also Tweeted to say it was forced to send customers home because of the power cut.

They tweeted: "After sending all our customers away and cancelling bookings due to a power cut, we now have lights. But no customers. Please come and eat with us."

A resident said the outage caused carnage: "There was a powercut in St. Paul’s and surrounding - apprently traffic lights weren’t working and it was carnage on the street? According to my neighbours."

WPD apologised for the incident, a spokesperson said: "Supplies are now restored in #BS1 #StPauls area. Thank you for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience caused by the #powercut. "
