Homes across Merseyside woken by 'loud plane noise' heard for miles

Homes across Merseyside were woken up by a "loud plane noise" that was heard for miles.

People in all areas of Liverpool and Wirral took to social media at around 10.30pm on Thursday night after being startled by the noise.

Many were baffled by what had created the sound but others were quick to reassure them that it was a plane that could be heard.

On Twitter, user @rudkin_abigail said: "Sounded like a really really really low plane going over the house.

"So so loud."

ANother user @KittySnac also said: "Anybody in Bootle hear this noise? Is it the docks again."

But a follower quickly replied: "Aye I heard it, thought it was a plane flying dead low or something."

Other people tweeted to state that the plane that had been heard was an RAF Typhoon, while flight tracking service Flight Radar recorded a fighter jet of the same description beginning a circuit over the city shortly after 9pm.

Stephen Sutton said: "RAF Typhoon just passed over North Liverpool then."

Thankfully for heavy sleepers, Liverpool John Lennon Airport Spotters tweeted to put people's minds at ease and also confirmed that this would not be the last time the plane would be heard over the city.

They said: "Everyone may be aware there was two fighter jets flying over Liverpool around 20 minutes ago.

"These were two Eurofighter Typhoons from RAF Coningsby as the base is on night flying for the next two weeks.

"These were TYPHOO19 (ZK321) & TYPHO326 (ZJ946). "
