Homers power Brewers' 3-1 win against Pirates

MILWAUKEE _ The Pittsburgh Pirates' unlikely run of recent success at Miller Park is over.

Powered by home runs from Scooter Gennett and Chris Carter, the Milwaukee Brewers notched a 3-1 victory on Thursday night to snap the Pirates' six-game winning streak on their home field.

Chase Anderson (9-11) also turned in a strong 52/3-inning start for Milwaukee, which won its 69th game to surpass its total from last season despite its status as a rebuilding club.

The Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 lead two batters into the bottom of the first after Jonathan Villar drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on an opposite-field homer by Gennett.

It was the only real pressure the Brewers put on Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong (3-6), however. They managed just two base runners and one hit _ a Hernan Perez single in the second _ against him before he was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fifth.

Anderson was up to the challenge.

After allowing a pair of singles in the opening inning, he retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced before giving up a solo homer to Francisco Cervelli that sneaked just over the wall in right field _ the catcher's first round-tripper since last Sept. 30.

Anderson finished out the fifth and got two outs into the sixth before he was chased by Andrew McCutchen's double. He allowed four hits and a walk with six strikeouts, continuing a run of solid starts that stretches back to late July.

Carter provided some breathing room with his homer to right-center to lead off the Brewers' seventh. It was Carter's 37th of the season and his 88th run batted in, with both totals tying the career highs he set with the Houston Astros in 2014.

Ryan Braun, who returned to the lineup after taking two games off for paternity leave, is now tied with Carter for the team RBI lead.

Carlos Torres, Corey Knebel and Tyler Thornburg combined for 31/3 innings of scoreless relief behind Anderson, with Thornburg registering his 12th save.
