Homeowners set to be offered £7,000 grants to replace gas boilers with green alternative

The Government is planning to offer homeowners £7,000 grants in a bid to replace gas boilers.

To meet net-zero emission goals by 2050, gas boilers should stop being sold from 2025 according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

A Clean Heat Grants scheme will help homeowners fund environmentally-friendly alternatives to gas boilers from April 2022.

Among the viable alternatives being considered are heat pumps, although the cost of switching from a gas boiler could run to £14,000 per home.

The Government plans to spend £400million removing gas boilers, with Clean Heat grants set to rise from the previously-reported £4,000 to £7,000, according to The Times.

That will help to fund around 60,000 heat pumps as Britons are encouraged to switch to greener boilers.

Heat pumps, which cost around £10,000 in comparison to the £1,000 cost of a some gas boilers, are better for the environment because they use a small amount of electricity to transfer heat.

The IEA has said the UK needs to ban fossil fuel boilers from 2025 to meet its net-zero emissions target, as one of 400 proposals for the country to be net zero by 2050.

As well as gas boilers, the Government plans to ban new petrol and diesel cars from being sold from 2030.
