Homeowner left with 'absolutely horrendous' new-build with flooding and faulty roof

A homeowner has spoken of his "absolutely horrendous" experience after buying a new-build home from Persimmon with a long list of faults.

Barrie McPhilbin, 49, was left frustrated after moving into his new house in Hucknall, Nottingham, last June.

The house cost McPhilbin £179,000, plus £8,000 worth of additions such as kitchen upgrades, according to the Nottingham Post.

But McPhilbin said the experience has been "nothing but stress".

Since moving in, he claims the house has had a faulty fire alarm, roofing problems and says the construction crew have left it "in a demolished state".

He also claims his kitchen has flooded three times in the space of 12 months.

"It's been nothing but stress. It's just absolutely horrendous. You buy your dream home and now I've got two pages of faults, it's been an ongoing battle.

"You are always waiting for the next thing to go wrong."

McPhilbin claims that when the site manager visited, he even asked him to put in a good house survey.

He added: "I joked it off and said my priority was the house getting sorted. I told the customer service manager and they told me it was not common practice.

"They need a kick up the backside. I wish I had walked away before the sale had been completed."

McPhilbin said the biggest issue for him is the 'constant chasing to get things repaired'. He said he has reported all of his issues to Persimmon, but they have not yet been fixed.

A spokesperson for Persimmon Homes Nottingham said: “We always endeavour to address customer concerns within a timely manner.

“Our records show that all outstanding issues we are aware of at this property have either been attended to or are in the process of being agreed with the customer.

“Our customer care team remains in regular contact.”

In July The Mirror reported another couple were forced to pay an £8,000 bill after contractors revealed their dream home was built with a hole in the roof - and the Persimmon refused to compensate them.

Homeowners Stewart and Atenea Bottomley bought the three-story property in Bannerbrook Park, Coventry, in 2019.

They noticed water seeping through the walls in one of the bedrooms at the start of last year before calling out roofers to inspect the issue.

The Bottomleys suspected it was a regular leak which would cost "a couple of grand at worst" to put right - but were stunned when they learned the extent of the problem.

The brickwork was completed too high, leaving a metal joist hanger poking into the roofing felt which water runs off.

This then created a hole, with the roofers telling them it had likely been leaking since it was built 13 years ago.

Works were carried out in February costing £7,812, with the couple calling on house-builders Persimmon to reimburse them with "fair compensation", but they have refused.
