Homeowner angers neighbours by painting huge emojis on beachside house

The owner of a beachside house has sparked an outbreak of angry faces among neighbours in Los Angeles by painting it pink and adding giant yellow emojis.

Kathryn Kidd had been reported to city chiefs and fined $4,000 (£3,300) for letting out the property for short-term rentals, in breach of city rules.

Now, the top floor of Ms Kidd’s once tan duplex in Manhattan Beach features an emoji with its tongue sticking out.

Meanwhile, the ground floor has been adorned with another yellow smiley with a zipper across its mouth — emoji speak for “shut up”.

Ms Kidd told the LA Times she rejected accusations that the paint job was an act of retaliation, and added: “I did it for the purpose of being happy, being positive.”

But neighbour Susan Wieland, who plans to lodge another formal complaint with city bosses, said: “It is our city’s responsibility to have regulations in place because people can do anything.”
