Homemade film shows Goodfellas wannabes counting huge stacks of drug cash in living room

Drug dealers filmed themselves sitting amid bundles of cash as they basked in the profits of their lucrative cocaine business.

The homemade video - reminiscent of scenes from rap videos or Hollywood gangster epics like Goodfellas - reveals the huge amount of cash at the disposal of gang leader Jamie Oldroyd.

It shows Oldroyd sitting among stacked bundles of notes and a counting machine as he and his associates revel in so much money they need devices to work out how much they have.

Detectives believe the bundles totalled around £150,000.

The living room video offered detectives an insight into the extent of Oldroyd’s operation.

A 14 month investigation into the Warrington criminal uncovered how he moved cocaine, some of which is thought to have been supplied by Merseyside drugs bosses, to London, Manchester, Scunthorpe and Carlisle.

He was eventually busted through the Cheshire Police probe Operation Dreadnought, which took down him and more than a dozen of his underworld associates.

That included Taulant Paja, the other man shown in this footage.

Oldroyd, 29 and of Rennie Drive, Warrington, was jailed for 14 years and three months for conspiracy to supply cocaine.

Paja, 22 and of Gladstone Mews was sentenced to six years and six months for the same offence.

While studying that group Cheshire Police gathered intelligence on a separate gang that operated in connection with Oldroyd’s crew.

That information led to a dramatic stop on the M6 that saw police pull offenders from two vehicles moving in convoy as they transported cocaine worth £20m to the North West.

The 186kg seizure is thought to be the largest ever land-based consignment discovered in the UK.

Ringleader Jamie Simpson and three other members of that gang have been jailed for a combined 35 years.

The downfall of both firms, which were based in Warrington but whose tentacles stretched across the UK, can now be reported after the conclusion of a trial linked to the investigation.

Following the end of that case, Detective Chief Inspector Mike Evans, from Cheshire Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: "This operation has not only resulted in the largest haul of cocaine being seized in the history of Cheshire but also the largest national land based seizure known to police.

“We have wiped out two organised crime groups, preventing them as well as other gangs from gaining extreme profits and in doing so have protected our communities along with vulnerable adults from criminals who bring with them intimidation, exploitation and violence."
