Homeless woman gives birth to twins 11 weeks early on street days before Christmas

A homeless woman has given birth to premature twins on a cold street near Cambridge University's campus just days before Christmas.

The woman, believed to be about 30, gave birth to her two babies shortly before 7am on Sidney Street, outside Cambridge's Trinity College on Monday.

She was helped by members of the public, who called her an ambulance.

Paramedics arrived and assisted the woman before taking her and her newborns to hospital, reports Cambridgeshire Live .

According to a witness, the woman had given birth to her children at 29 weeks, which is around 11 weeks early.

She said she had cycled past at around 7.15am Monday and had seen both mum and the two babies wrapped up in blankets inside the ambulances.

The witness said: "They were all in the ambulances by the time I cycled past. My workmate was first on the scene, and luckily Sainsbury's was open early that morning and she ran in there for help.

"I'm hoping she gets given somewhere to live and the babies are OK. With what people are doing right now with Corbyn's Christmas Challenge what happened is very relevant to many people."

A spokesman from the East of England Ambulance Service said: "An ambulance was sent to Sidney Street, Cambridge shortly before 7am yesterday following reports of a woman in labour.

"A woman and two infants were transported to Rosie Hospital for further assessment and care."

Despite Cambridgeshire's prosperous reputation, around nine per cent of residents across the county cannot afford to pay their heating bills.

CambridgeshireLive and Cambridge News are currently running a Surviving Winter Campaign with Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.

It aims to raise £25,000 to help those who cannot afford to pay their bills.
