Homeless woman gives birth to premature twins on the street days before Christmas

A homeless woman gave birth to twins around 11 weeks early on the street just days before Christmas.

Paramedics raced to help the rough sleeper who's babies were born just before 7am on December 23, outside a university building.

Passers by helped the woman, though to be around 30-years-old until ambulance crews arrived.

One witness told Cambridgeshire Live that the woman gave birth at 29 weeks which would make the twins' arrival 11 weeks early.

She said she had cycled past at around 7.15 and had seen both mum and the two babies wrapped up in blankets inside the ambulances.

The witness said: "They were all in the ambulances by the time I cycled past. My workmate was first on the scene, and luckily Sainsbury's was open early that morning and she ran in there for help.

The rough sleeper was found outside Trinity College which falls under Cambridge University (Cambridgeshire Live)

"I'm hoping she gets given somewhere to live and the babies are ok. With what people are doing right now with Corbyn's Christmas Challenge what happened is very relevant to many people."

A spokesman from the ambulance service said: "An ambulance was sent to Sidney Street, Cambridge shortly before 7am yesterday following reports of a woman in labour.

"A woman and two infants were transported to Rosie Hospital for further assessment and care."

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up for the woman and her twins. You can donate here.
