Sadness after sudden death of woman who had been homeless in Liverpool

Campaigners are devastated after homeless woman who had spent time living on the streets of Liverpool has died.

The Liverpool Echo reports that volunteers in the city were informed of the woman's death on Monday night.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Winnie, who is an Irish national, who had spent time on and off living on the streets of the city centre has been attacked recently.

But the Echo understands any attack is not linked to her death, which is not believed to be as a result of suspicious circumstances.

Although she spent time on the street, Winnie had a home address in Old Swan, where she was found dead at 9am on January 24.

Michelle Langan, of the Papercup Project Charity, which organises teams of volunteers in the city centre on Mondays, said her teams were told of Winnie's death last year.

She said she had not seen Winnie, since Christmas Day last year.

"Last time I saw her was waking her up on Christmas Day in the doorway of Next.

"She was an older lady - very loud and opinionated.

"All of the homeless [people] knew her. She was a real character."

She told Michelle she wasn't bothered that it was Christmas Day as she had lost a child on that day so it wasn't a day she celebrated.

"The homeless community only found out this week that she had died," she added.

"One of the girls told us she died two weeks ago, the lady said she had been beaten up by a man not long ago."

It was "so upsetting and frightening for other women on the streets".

Michelle wants Winnie to be properly remembered and not to become just another statistic.

"I just can't let it go by," she explained. "She deserves better than that".

Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that officers attended an address in Old Swan following the sudden death of a woman last Friday, 24 January.

"The woman, who was in her 50s, was sadly found deceased at her home around 9am.

"There are no suspicious circumstances in connection with her death."
