Homeless with coronavirus to receive after care and support at Edinburgh Milestone centre

As lockdown continues, it is evident that charities are continuing to stay involved in their local communities, helping in any way they can during this challenging time.

One example of this are Waverly Care, who have just announced that their Milestone centre, usually used to support people with HIV and Hepatitis C, will now be used as a care facility for the homeless who have been treated in hospital for coronavirus.

In April, the charity agreed a project with NHS Lothian and the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership to begin accepting referrals from hospitals and provide interim care.

The aim of the new initiative is to provide support to the homeless who have been treated in hospital for the virus, enabling them to return to a safe life in the community. Emotional and mental health support is being put in place by Waverly Care, alongside alcohol and drug services.

The centre has been fully equipped with infection control methods alongside PPE, with referrals set up with accommodation and support before they are officially discharged from the centre.

Grant Sugden, Waverley Care’s Chief Executive said: "Waverley Care Milestone has continued to adapt and respond to the changing needs of people living with HIV and hepatitis C.

"We are really pleased that we are able to support the NHS and the Health and Social Care Partnership to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our society during the COVID-19 pandemic."

The Milestone centre has been treating those with HIV and Hepatitis C since 1991, and although the building will have a slightly different use during the pandemic, Waverly Care will still continue to carry out their original work.

Keyworkers across Scotland will continue to ensure people have access to medication and food as well as providing much needed emotional support.
