'Homeless' play-off finalists Newport thrown lifeline by Premier League club

Newport County will train at Cardiff City Stadium ahead of their League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The Exiles face Tranmere for a place in League One a week on Saturday, but their preparations for the game were thrown into chaos when it was revealed their usual training base was unavailable due to maintenance work.

It left Newport manager Michael Flynn to seek alternative facilities, due to the Welsh club not owning a ground or training pitch.

Cardiff - who have been relegated from the Premier League and whose season is now over - have stepped in to help.

“It shows the class and exactly the kind of football club Cardiff are for choosing to help a fellow Welsh team out when they knew the kind of situation we were in with regards to training leading up to Wembley,” said Flynn.

“It’s an unbelievable gesture from everyone at Cardiff.

“I’d like to personally thank [manager] Neil Warnock, [chief executive] Ken Choo and everyone connected with the club for making this possible.

“It shows what is possible when Welsh football comes together.”
