Homeless opera singer performs concert after becoming online sensation

A homeless subwaysinger who became an internet sensation after a video of her singing opera went viral has given her first public performance.

Emily Zamourka appeared at a concert in San Pedro, California, during the city’s Little Italy festival this weekend, where she sang the same song that led to her national fame.

Zamourka made headlines after she was recorded by a Los Angeles police officer who shared the video on social media, and was invited to perform at the celebratory day by LA City Councilman Joe Buscaino.

While on stage, the Russian-born musician, who became homeless after falling ill and being unable to afford her medical bills, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity.

“Eventually, I did touch your spirits and I'm so glad about that, that I could touch your heart with my voice,” the 52-year-old told the audience, according to ABC7. “Thank you so much for all of this that’s happening right now. I really thank you. I’m so overwhelmed.”

In addition to inviting her to perform, Buscaino’s office also paid for Zamourka’s transportation, her time, and her hotel room, ABC7 reports.

The councilman’s office is also working to find Zamourka long-term housing. Meanwhile music producer Joel Diamond has reportedly offered her a record deal.

On top of a potential shot at fame, a GoFundMe started for Zamourka has raised more than $61,000.

On Twitter, where her story of a second chance first started, people have praised Zamourka, a classically trained pianist and violinist, for her perseverance and future success.

“Truly an inspiring story in today’s world,” one person wrote.
