Homeless man who stabbed London mosque prayer leader jailed for seven years

A man has been jailed for seven years and three months after stabbing a prayer leader at a mosque.

Daniel Horton, 30, attacked Raafat Maglad, 70, at the London Central Mosque in Regent's Park on February 20.

Mr Maglad, known as the muezzin - the person who makes the call to prayer - was left with a 1.5cm wound to his neck following the attack, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Horton, who was homeless at the time of the attack, knew Mr Maglad as he had attended the mosque for a number of years.

He previously pleaded guilty to one count of grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

The 30-year-old will serve another four years on extended licence after he is released.

The court heard how Mr Maglad, who was taken to hospital following the attack, returned to the mosque for Friday prayers less than 24 hours after the incident.

Last month, Judge Deborah Taylor was told by prosecutor Benn Maguire that Mr Maglad is now "less confident about standing in front of the prayer hall while the congregation is standing behind him, as he is scared about being attacked".

Mr Maglad suffered nerve damage, has trouble sleeping and his voice has been "adversely affected", Mr Maguire said.

In his victim impact statement, Mr Maglad said he has had over ten medical appointments for the injuries to his arm and shoulder and was facing shoulder surgery.
