Homeless man struggling in heat finds place to stay thanks to Good Samaritan

A homeless man was able to find accommodation thanks to a social media post from a good Samaritan who wanted to help him.

Ashley, 23, only had half a bottle of water to stay cool on Tuesday when Lewis Waterman noticed him by the leisure centre on Sutton Road in Hull.

Lewis spoke to Ashley rather than simply walking by him to learn more about plight, Hull Live reports.

Lewis found out Ashley was struggling in the heat and he wanted to help him.

He said: “Ashley is homeless due to being bullied in a hostel he was staying in. People were apparently stealing his things and money so he fought back and got kicked out the hostel.

“He suffers with anxiety and other mental health problems but he is very friendly. He only had a tent and half a bottle of water.”

Lewis posted a photo of Ashley on Facebook saying he was going to get him some food, drink and give him some money.

He then appealed to others for help saying: “If anyone can visit him or drop anything off especially in this heat will be so appreciated.

“He's a top lad and is not harassing anyone for money or food he's just wanting a place to stay and to stay hydrated in this really hot weather.”

After posting it, Lewis was amazed by the response from others which has helped Ashley, not just with food and drink, but also some safe accommodation.

Lewis said: “Other people took food and drink and my post managed to get him accommodation and safe.

“I'm glad I've helped in a massive way and that my post reached so many people.

“People are calling me Hull's hero and I've saved a life but it’s just who I am as a person and I'm glad that what I did possibly did save someone, especially at the age of 23.

“I sat with him and spoke to him give him money and food then had to make everyone else aware of this. I'm glad I did that.”
