Homeless man saved by heroic volunteers after being found unconscious on Dublin street

An unconscious homeless man was lucky to survive thanks to the quick response of volunteers, the Feed Our Homeless charity insisted on Monday.

Charity CEO Tony Walsh said finding the stricken individual, in his 20s, sprawled on the pavement at 2am early today was “frightening”.

The FOH founder was with co-founder Natasha Morgan and another volunteer when they discovered the homeless man on Dublin’s Henry Street.

Mr Walsh, who said it was still unclear what had happened to him, added: “We were out with our nightly outreach service and as soon as we turned the corner he was splattered on the ground, out cold in the middle of Henry Street.

“He was barely breathing.”

The charity chief said they called an ambulance right away and put the man in the recovery position.

Mr Walsh added: “They [the paramedics] were giving us information over the phone. Our volunteers are trained in first aid so they knew what to do as well.

“When the ambulance came they just said, ‘Thank God yous were here, he was lucky’.”

Mr Walsh said the man was released from hospital Monday and is recovering well.

FOH, who thanked the ambulance crew, had earlier posted on social media: “Sunday night while FOH outreach team were carrying out their usual nightly route in the city centre our team came across a homeless guy lying on the ground unconscious on Henry Street.

“Due to the quick thinking and training from our volunteers they certainly did save this young man’s life.

“Training our volunteers within FOH certainly does make a difference as our volunteers are prepared to deal with any situation that may occurs while carrying out FOH frontline service calmly and professionally. Well done to the FOH volunteers late night. Amazing teamwork.”
