Homeless man's possessions found on fire in Swansea doorway and he hasn't been seen there since

Possessions believed to belong to a homeless man seen regularly in a Swansea High Street doorway were found on fire.

The man and his dog are understood not to have been seen since the incident, at his usual location, just below the old Labour Hall and alongside a fake shop called Heads Up.

Passer-by Adam Melhado, 41, was getting off a bus near Swansea train station at around 9.30am on Monday morning when he noticed the blaze.

“When I got off the bus we were making our way over and could smell the burning and then saw that a bag for life with all his blankets and some clothes and things were all on fire. All the stuff was burnt,” he said.

“I moved it away and stamped it out best I could but the stuff was destroyed,” he added.

The homeless man was not there at the time and the possessions were under shelter in the doorway.

Mr Melhado who frequently takes food and blankets to the homeless in Swansea, works with S.O.S Shelters Wales, which is converting portable buildings to offer as temporary accommodation for the homeless.

“We’ve spent a lot of time with the man and have given him some food and things. He’s a really nice bloke, very polite and genuine. His life is in that bag and now he may have nothing left, I don’t know why somebody would do something like that,” adds Mr Melhado.

It's believed that the man has not been seen in High Street since Monday morning and his whereabouts are not currently known.

What life is like for the homeless after Christmas:

"We’ve collected a couple of blankets and parcels for him and would really like to give them to him to help him out after what’s happened,” added the 41-year-old.

Wales Online has contacted a number of homeless charities about the man's welfare but has not been able to obtain any information.
