Homeless man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting child

June 04--A man who sexually assaulted the child of a family he befriended is going to prison for the crime, Kane County prosecutors said.

Jay A. Davies, 53, who is homeless, agreed to an eight year prison sentence Friday in exchange for a guilty plea to criminal sexual assault, a class 1 felony, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office. Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti accepted the plea.

Davies must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence and must register for life as a sexual offender under the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act after his release, prosecutors said. He was given credit for 344 days served in the Kane County jail, it stated.

Prosecutors presented evidence indicating Davies sexually assaulted the child with force one evening in June 2015, the release stated. He knew the victim, who was younger than 18 at the time, it stated. The assault occurred in Batavia. Davies had no known last address but was known to frequent the area, prosecutors said.

The case was investigated by the Kane County Child Advocacy Center with assistance from the Batavia Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Lori Schmidt, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center.
