Homeless man jailed for 20 weeks for punching pregnant woman in the stomach

A homeless man was jailed for 20 weeks for punching a pregnant woman in the stomach.

The attack took place after they argued about a comment on the radio, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard.

Michael Owen, 38, denied assault causing actual bodily harm but was found guilty after a trial.

He knew that the woman was expecting a child, the court heard.

District Judge Leo Pyle pointed out that she had to attend court to give evidence. She ended up with a bruised arm. The baby is healthy.

Owen admitted having cannabis on Denman Street on June 4 and stealing a £200 jacket from the House of Fraser shop in the intu Victoria Centre on October 5. He must pay £200 compensation to the store and £200 compensation to the woman.

The judge told Owen: "It seems your state of health has been exacerbated by lots of illicit drugs. You have spent many thousands simply on drugs."

As part of the court order, he must not see the woman for a year or go onto the street where she lives. He can phone her but only between 9am and 6pm.

David Hallmark, defending, said: "He is genuinely remorseful."
