Homeless man jailed after racially abusing security guard at Central Library

A homeless man must pay £100 compensation for racially abusing a security guard who caught him boozing in the Central Library.

Craig Brooker, 37, was sent to prison for nine weeks after appearing at the city's magistrates' court over the incident on April 30.

District Judge Leo Pyle told him: "He was simply doing his job as a security guard in that library. You are not allowed to drink there, obviously.

"There are computers and screens. If you dropped the drink, you could mess them up. A library is a place for quiet study and reading."

The judge said that the compensation was to mark the offence caused to the security officer.

"Your abuse was made worse by the racial part. He was not physically hurt but there was hurt caused by the comments made," the judge added.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said Brooker brought alcohol into the library and began to drink it.

When the security guard mentioned it, Brooker suggested "going back to your country."

Mr Pietryka said: "He attempted to kick him and they grappled with each other. He got very close to him at the time."

Brooker, who represented himself, offered no explanation for the trouble in the library.

He admitted racially aggravated assault by beating and having the drug amphetamine at the Bridewell Police Station on August 8.

He told the judge: "I found the amphetamine in Victoria Park and put it in my pocket so a kiddie didn't pick it up.

"I had got other things on my mind, left it in my bag and forgot about it."

The drug must be destroyed. Brooker was excused paying a government surcharge or prosecution costs so he can concentrate on the compensation.

He will serve half the prison term inside and will spend a year on probation.
