Homeless man in tears during national anthem as Wales fan uses spare ticket to take him to Six Nations match

On their way to Wales' Six Nations opener against Italy last weekend, rugby fan Jonathan Morgan and his group of friends found themselves with a spare ticket to the Principality Stadium encounter.

A last-minute cancellation meant the group of seven was now down to six.

Rather than trying to sell the ticket, the group opted instead to make an incredibly kind gesture that will live long in the memory of its recipient.

Jonathan, 50, said: "It was a group of us going to the rugby.

"One of the boys couldn't go, so we had his ticket.

"I said we should give it to someone who's homeless."

So, walking to the stadium gates, they saw a homeless man sitting on Westgate Street and offered him the chance to see Wales in action, and the man - who Jonathan says is called Simon - gladly accepted.

"As we were walking to the game, he was just sitting there.

"Just before the anthem, he came in."

The group, from Milford Haven, also bought him a few drinks and a hot dog during the game, which ended 42-0 to Wales. It was Simon's first time inside the stadium.

"He cried during the anthem. He said it was one of the best things that had ever happened to him."

A snap of the pair sat side by side in the stands has since gone viral and has been seen by tens of thousands, due to Jonathan's daughter Natassja posting about what had happened on Twitter.

She wrote: "Couldn’t be prouder of my dad. At the Wales vs Italy match he had a spare ticket and met a homeless man on the street who he gave the ticket to... made this man's year and said it was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him! The smile says it all".

It's safe to say it's a reaction Jonathan wasn't expecting.

"I didn't do it for anything like that", he adds. "I haven't even got Twitter.

"I think he enjoyed himself. A good day out."
