Homeless man admits arson attacks in Stokes Croft

A 26-year-old man is set to receive hospital treatment after he admitted starting fires in Bristol.

Ali Thahab, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to two charges of arson on November 6 last year.

Firefighters rushed to Stokes Croft at around 2am after police received reports of suspicious activity in a building.

Crews from Southmead, Hicks Gate and Temple put out three fires at the property in King Square.

The building is located off Jamaica Street.

It is near several student flats and the Compass Centre night shelter.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used two high-pressure hose reels and one 45mm jet to extinguish the fire.

Police confirmed no-one was injured in the incident.

Thahab was due to be sentenced today (October 7, 2019)

But Alistair Haggerty, defending, told Bristol Crown Court a hospital bed was not yet available for him to undergo a hospital treatment order, as recommended by two doctors.

The recorder Mr James Waddington QC adjourned the case, pending accommodation, for sentence as soon as possible.

Thahab was remanded in custody.
