Homeless graphic designer is back on the streets and trying to avoid violent drug dealers

A homeless graphic designer is back on the streets of Cardiff living in a tent just a few weeks after he was given somewhere to stay.

Daniel Smith, 25, told WalesOnline about how he became homeless for around seven weeks after being evicted from a house in Newport where he was paying £90 a week to rent a room.

Daniel was living underneath a bridge in Cardiff. After his story went public, he said he was inundated with job offers and was given a room by a member of the public at an AirBnb.

But he claimed he was kicked out by security after a few days as he wasn't the person who initially booked the room.

After that came to an end, Daniel is back living on the streets of Cardiff in a tent.

He said he had job interviews and was given some freelance graphic design work. But he added that most of the work was unpaid and a lot of designers were asking him to get funding from the government.

He is launching a Kickstarter campaign next week, which will fund him to design a children's book.

"The Kickstarter campaign is something positive and will help me get back on my feet," he said.

"Things were looking positive and I'm hoping over the next few weeks to get back to working and getting myself a proper place."

He hopes the funding from the campaign will allow him to produce some work and also give him some money to help him during the winter.

Meanwhile, he is having to deal with everything that comes with living rough.

Around three weeks ago, Daniel said he was assaulted by a group of men, while staying underneath a bridge in Cardiff.

He said the injuries meant he couldn't take on any physical or manual jobs.

"I was offered loads of manual and delivery jobs which I really wanted to take but I was assaulted in the night.

"A group of boys approached me and asked if I wanted to buy drugs and when I said no they attacked me by punching me in the ribs and kicking me in my ear.

"Maybe I was rude with the way I answered back but I didn't want any drugs and they attacked me. I even bought a smartphone to be able to work wherever needed but I couldn't because of my injuries."

Daniel said he was now sleeping in a tent in a wooded area of Cardiff where he said things were a lot calmer.

He said he'd had a lot of support through text messages and phone calls from the public after they had read the story.

Daniel said: "I prefer to stay in a wooded area. It's a lot more peaceful and I feel safe because no one approaches me there.

"I'm quite well fed and I've been couch surfing from Cardiff to Newport because of the support I've receieved.

"I tried to drink water from a nearby river but I was sick so who knows what was in that but other than that I prefer it."
