Popular young man's tragic body found in Dublin city carpark as councillor slams lack of clear guidance surrounding deaths in recent weeks

Another person has sadly died on the city's streets in just the last two weeks.

The Dublin City multi-story car park near Brooks Hotel on Drury Street was an eerie sight this morning as a poor young man's lifeless body was found by a passerby just before 2am.

However, a close friend of the tragic man found - who was only in his twenties - told Dublin Live that he was not homeless, but had found himself without accommodation for the night due to unforeseen circumstances.

He added that the tragedy had left his large group of close-knit pals devastated, and said he was a gentle, good-humoured soul who was always kind to others.

The heartbroken friend said: "We're devastated. He was a lovely, genuine person who never looked for trouble and was too young to die."

The area was immediately sealed off by Gardai who are investigating all circumstances surrounding the grim discovery but do not believe his death is suspicious or that foul play was involved.

The heartbreaking death comes shortly after five homeless tragedies were put on record in a fortnight to forget for Dublin.

Dublin City Council expressed its concern over the “unprecedented” deaths earlier this week and Inner City Help & Homeless (ICHH) CEO and Independent Councillor for Dublin Central Anthony Flynn shockingly revealed that as many as three other homeless deaths from the last two weeks remain unconfirmed.

He told Dublin Live: "First of all, I just want to pass on my sympathies to his family. My thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.

"Sadly, homeless deaths have been under-reported in Dublin in the last two weeks.

"Six deaths have been confirmed but I have counted at least nine deaths according to my records, meaning at least three of these tragedies have not been confirmed by Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE)."

The DRHE offered its sympathies to the families affected earlier this week saying that five deaths in a week was "unprecedentedly high and obviously a cause for concern".

They said: "In all of these cases, support was being offered by our services, but unfortunately homelessness is often complicated by medical or social factors."

But Councillor Flynn does not feel enough is being done to tackle the current homeless crisis.

He added: "We're not seeing the results on the ground for homeless services. The number of deaths in the city is very high and nothing is being done to stop it.

"Questions need to be asked and answered and condolences need to be passed on to all families who have lost a loved one to homelessness this month."

A Garda spokesman said: "We are investigating all the circumstances following the death of a male in his 20s on Drury Street, at approximately 2:25am this morning, Thursday 30th July 2020.

"The body remains at scene before it will be removed for a post mortem which will determine the course of the investigation."
