Homeless deaths in Dublin nearly double in 2020 as HSE begin investigation into new report

Homeless deaths in Dublin city sadly almost doubled in a calendar year, a new report claims.

The HSE are investigating the steep climb after a total of 79 people classified as homeless passed away in the capital in 2020, according to the latest stats from the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive (DRHE).

The figure is up from 49 in 2019 and 47 in 2018, however the methods used to record the figures had changed for this year.

Of those 79, eight of the recorded deaths were rough sleepers, 44 passed away in emergency accommodation, and 27 died in long-term supported tenencies.

Three of the recorded deaths were also attributed to COVID-19.

The report said the DRHE was “concerned at the significant increase in deaths in the latter months of 2020 and a comprehensive review of such deaths for the full year is underway in conjunction with the HSE”.
