A homeless couple in Cork walked 10km for a hot meal, while pushing their toddler in a toy pram, it has emerged.
Catriona Twomey, who runs Cork Penny Dinners on Little Hanover Street, said that the couple’s appearance at the centre with their child had an emotional effect on the volunteers there.
The couple had recently lost their home and were unable to buy a new buggy after their old one broke.
The family could not afford transport from Little Island to the city centre so they made the journey by foot, pushing the toy pram the whole way, Cork Beo reports.
They sought help from Penny Dinners and Ms Twomey spoke to Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio 1 on Tuesday morning about the situation.
She said: “The shock from seeing these things goes, but the sadness stays. At the end of the day, we’re all only human.
“Their whole world had fallen down but they fought back.
“They made the best of what life had thrown at them and are determined to get back on their feet.”
Penny Dinners provided the family with a pram even though the couple did not ask for a replacement.
The family were left homeless for months but fortunately they have since found a place to live in the city.
