Homeless black man shot dead by US police after being stopped for 'jaywalking'

A homeless black man has been shot dead by police in California after reportedly being stopped for jaywalking.

Kurt Reinhold suffered fatal gunshot wounds on Wednesday during a confrontation with two Orange County Sheriff's Department deputies.

Officials the 42-year-old dad-of-two had grabbed an officer's gun.

Moments earlier he had been heard telling police: "Where did I jaywalk? Why did you stop me?"

Video showed him pushing an officer's hand away, telling him: "Stop touching me."

He was tackled to the floor, where a struggle ensued.

The shooting in San Clemente sparked widespread protests over police brutality, with the city council imposing a curfew.

A neighbour told the Daily Mail that Mr Reinhold was a "lovely man" and described themselves as devastated at his killing.

On Thursday the sheriff's department released a grainy photograph which it claims shows Mr Reinhold reaching for the officer's weapon.

Sheriff Don Barnes said witness video showed a deputy shouting "he's got my gun".

Two shots were fired by officers, and Mr Reinhold died at the scene.

He claimed not to know why the experienced officers had stopped Mr Reinhold.

He had reportedly moved from Los Angeles within the past month, but it's not clear how he became homeless.

Barnes told reporters: "Given the current climate of police and community relations, I understand that this conversation is going to be a difficult one around this incident."

Los Angeles local Steve Bauman told NBC that Mr Reinhold appeared to be struggling with his mental health.

He said: "By me getting close to him he was very agitated.

"He was just off. It's just sad that this had to happen like this versus another way to deal with him."
