Carrie Mathison and Homeland will be swapping the sunny climes of Cape Town for Berlin as the fifth season of the TV series sets up camp in the German capital.

Showtime announced on Monday that the hit drama will be shot entirely in Germany – a first for a US television series – with Carrie, played by Claire Danes, now working for a private Berlin security firm after becoming estranged from the CIA.

The series is set two years after the divisive season four finale (which was shot in South Africa) and will again have a focus on the Middle East – and could even take in recent events in Ukraine, according to showrunner Alex Gansa.

Gansa also recently spoke about the preparation that goes into every season of Homeland, with the showrunner and a team spending time in Washington researching international relations before they begin writing.

The show will shoot at the facilities of the studio and production outfit Studio Babelsberg, the same company that worked on Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning The Grand Budapest Hotel.
