Home remedies for wasp stings as invasion buzzes into UK gardens

As if the flustering heatwave wasn't enough, those stripy summer pests are back with a vengeance. And the invasion of wasps is expected to continue across the latter half of the summer.

Experts have offered advice on how to avoid being stung by the sugar-crazed little beasts. But for those unlucky ones, household items such as raw honey - indoors so you don't attract more - and ice can help soothe pain and reduce swelling.

Other suggestions include applying aloe vera gel as it holds anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, peppermint oil to calm the area and reduce irritation and itchiness and aspirin to aid healing. The enzymes in papaya can reduce the level of inflammation and counteract the effect of the venom while natural clay can help remove toxins out of a bite or sting.

A spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk said: “Most of us relish the arrival of summer and the holiday-feeling of a heatwave – but so do pesky insects. And we’re being warned about an upcoming wasp invasion across the country.

“It’s important to keep in mind that insects will only bite when agitated or when they feel threatened, so it’s best to remain calm and still. But if you are bitten or stung this summer it’s good to have some foolproof home remedies to hand to soothe painful injuries. Always remember that if the pain and swelling doesn’t let up and the wound is showing signs of infection, see a medical professional as soon as possible.”
