Home cook says we all make the same mistake when heating food in the microwave

Truly mastering the art of cooking to the level of being handed a Michelin star is a skill many professional chefs spend their careers trying to achieve.

But even by our lowly standards, if there's one culinary technique we can be pretty confident we've nailed, it would be the microwave.

Pop it in, press a few buttons and in two minutes you can have a dish ready to eat that would usually take hours to prepare. There's nothing to go wrong.

Except now one home cook has claimed we're all making the same mistake with the kitchen appliance - and millions of viewers have been left dumbfounded that they've somehow been using microwaves wrong their entire lives.

TikTok user Isabella Avila, who posts on the account Onlyjayus, uploaded a video and said: "You know when you reheat food in the microwave and some parts of it are hot enough to burn your mouth and the other part of it is frozen?

"Well that happens because you shouldn't actually have your food in the middle of the plate here.

"It should be on the edge so it can rotate around and heat evenly."

While some people questioned whether the placement actually made a difference, others were baffled that they had never been told the advice before.

One replied to say: "I've literally used a microwave wrong my whole life thanks for letting me know."

A second wrote: "I wish I had known that 10 years ago."

And another added: "Clearly I have been using my microwave wrong this whole time."

Isabella's advice wasn't done there, adding you should also place a cup of water into the microwave when reheating food like pizza or pasta "to keep it moisturised but stop it from getting too chewy".

Every day's a school day.
