Home business innovation 2015-16 competition entry: The Health Cloud

Morgan Price, director of The Health Cloud, explains why the business should win the home business category of the Guardian Small Business Showcase competition.

My business partner Craig Elding and I started our business, The Health Cloud, in our shared flat in late 2011 after the frustration of not being able to find work.

At the time we were aged 21 and 22. I had an IT background and Craig had a background in nutrition. We decided to create an online health store and sell only products that we thought were truly healthy. However, this was a secondary priority, our first was to create unbiased health articles and educate the public. It was a big task and naively we started the company with £2,000 each from our savings. A lot of that was gobbled up with software and the costs of company formation. The first year was a struggle, the flat turned into a warehouse, boxes in the living room (our office), boxes in the hallway and boxes in the box room (a large cupboard).

Our company has grown year on year and we have become known for stocking unique supplements. We are happy to have hit the following turnover figures: year one £26,000, year two £96,000 and year three £182,000. In year four we expect anything from £300,000 to £400,000.

All entries which meet the competition criteria are published and our judging panel select a shortlist of the top three for each category. Winners are announced at an awards ceremony in summer 2016.
